Amy L. Griffin receives dissertation award

Amy L. Griffin, Ph.D. Candidate in Geography (Adviser: Dr. Alan MacEachren)has been selected to receive the 2003 Alumni Association Dissertation Award.

Ten current Penn State graduate students have been selected to receive the 2003 Alumni Association Dissertation Awards. The Alumni Association Dissertation Awards recognize outstanding achievement in scholarship and professional accomplishment and are considered to be among the most prestigious available to Penn State graduate students. These awards provide support for doctoral candidates who have passed their comprehensive examinations and who have had their dissertation topics approved.

Winners were selected last semester to each receive $5,000 that will be placed in their student accounts in fall 2003. Winners of the first awards given in 2002, together with the 2003 award winners, have been invited to attend a luncheon on January 17, with Penn State's Board of Trustees.

Nominations for the awards are solicited from among the 90 doctoral programs at Penn State, with the top two nominations from each college constituting a pool of premier nominations that are forwarded to a selection committee. From this pool of candidates, two students are selected from the five following categories: Fine Arts and Humanities; Social Sciences; Physical and Computational Sciences; Life and Health Science; and Engineering.
