Software

1. JAVA-based Graphics Software Development Kit

To facilitate rapid application development of interactive web applets and applications, the project is scheduled to use nViZn™. Middle 1990s research at BLS in converting tables to graphs developed precursor library JAVA class library called GPL (Graphics Production Library). Those applications focused on multi-panel bar plots, time series and the incorporation of metadata. The interactive capabilities included such features as drag and drop reorganization, drill down, and pan and zoom. Private research developed nViZn to handle a much broader range of tasks, including extensive analytics to handle statistical operations. nViZn implements the graph algebra as described in "The Grammar of Graphics" (Wilkinson 1999).

2. GeoVISTA Studio

GeoVISTA Studio is a Java-based open software development environment. The main aim of the GeoVISTA Studio is to provide a programming-free environment within which to conduct both geocomputation and geographic visualization. Studio employs a visual programming interface, allowing users to quickly build their own applications using a workflow or dataflow paradigm.

3. Flash-based Dynamic Maps for the Web

Flash is a powerful programming tool for creating dynamic, vector-based graphics and animations for the web. The Flash "movie" files are lightweight, making them suitable for displaying data for government agencies and other organizations concerned about providing access to those with low-bandwith Internet connections. We have used Flash to create data-driven geo-visualization tools, a color assessment application for map-makers, and map-based learning games for children.

4. HealthVis Visualization System

The initial goal of this ongoing project was to construct a prototype interface that could be employed in empirical testing of representation and interaction techniques applied to analyzing multiple geo-referenced variables at several time intervals. The U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) commissioned this first study, designed to pinpoint specific conceptual and implementational issues in interface design for Geographic Visualization (geovisualization) and exploratory data analysis (EDA) of relationships between risk factors and mortality rates. They then commissioned a project to use results in design of an extension to the ArcView GIS. Subsequently, the National Cancer Institute has sponsored work to extend the environment and we plan further extensions and usability testing as part of the dgQG efforts.

 5. Functions for Robust Density and Regression Fitting

Available for both S-Plus and R systems.

6. Cluster Identification Experiments

These Flash test instruments were created to compare the effectiveness of animated with static small multiple maps for identifying clusters that move over space and through time. In this controlled experiment, we examined several factors that might have an impact upon map readers' ability to identify clusters; these factores included animation pace, cluster coherence, gender and the certainty of participants' answers.
