Reclassification: changing the number of classes

The ability to alter the number of classes into which a color scheme is divided is an important tool for exploring data.  The dynamic PCP makes this class number adjustment straightforward with a set of radio buttons on the left panel.  The default number of classes is 4, but can be adjusted to any number from 3 to 6.  This is a pared down version for the web; the includes capabilities to adjust the color scheme into any number of classes from 2 to 7, and future versions will include a classless (or "n-class") choice with a continuous color scheme.

The default classification scheme is equal interval, where the range of each class is the same.  This may be adjusted on the fly, however, by changing the class breakpoints.  The exception to this default is when an adjustment is made from a high number of classes (say 6) to a lower number, in which case the top class of the new classification scheme is composed of the top classes of the previous scheme.

In the larger Apoala visualization system, this operation is linked with other representation forms; that is, performing this operation on the PCP will alter maps, scatter plots, and other representation forms in a similar way.
