ICA Commission on Visualization meeting, Delft -- August 16-18, 1996 report submitted by Alan M. MacEachren This was the first full meeting of the Commission following approval of its terms of reference in Barcelona. The goals for the meeting were to allow all participants to report on their current work and receive feedback from the group, to develop one or more research initiatives, and to plan for Stockholm and beyond. The meeting was quite successful, bringing together 21 participants (listed below) for a stimulating series of presentations and discussions over parts of three days. We discussed 17 working papers (of the 19 that have recently been posted on the Commission's WWW site ‚ http://www.geovista.psu.edu/ica/index.html). Of the papers discussed, 10 were introduced by their author while the other 7 for which the author could not be present were introduced by a discussant. In all cases discussion was facilitated by a link to the Web version of the paper displayed via overhead panel. The following working papers were discussed (with the discussant listing in those cases where the author was not present). Open Spatial Data Standards, Thresea-Marie Rhyne Dynamic Graphics in a GIS, James Majure, J¸rgen Symanzik, and Diane Cook [discussant: Peter Fisher] New Media and its Application to the Production of Map Products, William Cartwright The use of VRML for cartographic presentation, David Fairbairn and Scott Parsley Time-Series Animation Techniques for Visualizing Urban Growth, Penny Masuoka & William Acevedo [discussant: Alan MacEachren] Principles of Hypermaps, Menno-Jan Kraak and Rico van Driel Role of Dynamic Cartography in Simulations of Landscape Processes Based on Multivariate Fields, Lubos Mitas, William M. Brown, and Helena Mitasova [discussant: Frans van der Wel] Exploring Spatial Data Representation with Dynamic Graphics, Jason Dykes Geo-Information at Delft University of Technology, Robert E. Kuunders Linking Reality and Abstraction through Cartographic Animation, Michael P. Peterson [discussant: Connie Blok] Cartographic Display of Data-Reliability: Does it Benefit the Map User? Beverly Evans [discussant: Alan MacEachren] Visualizing Spatial Data Uncertainty Using Animation, Charles R. Ehlschlaeger, Ashton M. Shortridge, and Michael F. Goodchild Interfacing Spatial Information in Virtual Environments, Jorge Nelson Neves, Pedro GonÁalves, Joaquim Muchaxo and Jo“o Pedro Silva [discussant: Jo“o Pedro Fernandes] Visualization and Interaction Tools for Aerial Photograph Mosaics, Jo“o Pedro Fernandes; Alexandra Fonseca; LuÌs Pereira; Adriano Faria; Helder Figueira; InÍs Henriques; Rita GarÁ“o; AntÛnio C’mara Geographic Visualization for the Integrated Assessment of the Susquehanna River, David Howard Publishing Cartography on the Web, Stynes K, Dykes J, Fisher P, Unwin D and Wood J Modelling Multiple Spatial Uncertainties, Trevor J. Davis and C. Peter Keller [discussant: Joe Wood] Many of the papers discussed have been submitted to a special paper/electronic issue of the journal Computers & Geosciences (with MacEachren and Kraak as co-editors of the issue). This issue is expected to be published in time for the Stockholm ICA meeting in June 1997. In addition to discussing (and viewing) the set of working papers listed, ideas exchanged during the formal and informal parts of the meeting resulted in a decision to undertake a research initiative over the next two years. The topic of the initiative is desktop virtual reality as it can be applied to the exploration of global scale geo-referenced information. A more formal statement concerning this initiative in preparation. We expect to have presentations of preliminary research and hold focused discussions on this initiative at our next Commission meeting. This next meeting is now set for June 19-21, 1997 in Gaevle, Sweden just prior to the ICA Technical Meeting in Stockholm. The call for participation will go out before the end of September (and will be posted on the Commission's WWW site). This meeting will be held in collaboration with the ICA Working Group on Generalization. Participants: Alan MacEachren, Menno-Jan Kraak, Peter Fisher, Theresa-Marie Rhyne, Marek Baronowski, William Cartwright, Michael Wood, Maria Andrzejewska, Connie Blok, Gerd Buziek, David Fairbairn, David Howard, Frans van der Wel, Robert Kuunders, Rico van Driel, Katherine Synes, Joe Wood, Jo“o Fernandes, Hal Moellering, Chris Board, Charles Ehlschlaeger
